Different local shops gain their initial fame for different reasons. Perhaps Ivan Ramen's first draw was that he was the first foreigner to open his own shop. Maybe Kikanbo's catch was the spicy challenge factor. Regardless, both of these shops drew people in, and kept them with the taste. Hokiboshi follows suit.
Why would this out-of-the-way shop in Akabane draw the amount of media attention it has?
What is so special about their 雪のたんたん, their Yuki's tantanmen?
Why, because of Yuki of course! At only 18 years old, she became one of the youngest people to manage a ramen shop. Now, at 21, the shop's success has led to another branch in Kanda, and plans to move overseas to Las Vegas, of all places.
But is the kawaii factor enough? How is the ramen?
Yuki's own creation is a mild tantanmen that lives up to the hype. By mixing in a bit of soy milk, the underlying heat is knocked down to a manageable level. Add in homemade noodles and some fresh tomatoes, and this bowl works very well.
On a side note, I was filming with the TV show GO! オスカル X21 this day. It should be on air sometime in February. Friday night at 1:20am. And yes, this is a show about 14 year old idols eating ramen.
