There is a whole genre of ramen that I rarely adventure to. We can label it as "Expensive Chinese Restaurant Ramen". I am happy with that title. Nangokushuka is one of those shops. I often go to their main one in Harajuku, but this time I found myself eating the seasonal course at their Yokohama branch.
The course menus, which range in price from $50 to over $100 a person, are comprised of plate after plate of seasonal ingredients cooked Southern China style.
Spiced crab soup.
Deep fried edamame sprouts with pink Mongolian salt.
Little tiny octopi braised in fish sauce with root vegetables.
And tantanmen.
The fiery soup is evened out with plenty of ground sesame. Good stuff, though after the 7 or 8 courses we were served prior, ramen was not something we expected to eat. For reference, the tantanmen is not part of the course menu.
You could very well waltz in to one of these high class spots and order just the ramen, though you will probably feel out of place.
